CONTEXT
WHAT IS AN HS CODE?
A standardized international code used to classify products for customs, tariffs, and global trade. An HS code is necessary to be in compliance with global trade regulations.
WHAT IS CLASSIFY?
Zonos’ Classify tool helps eCommerce companies, online marketplaces, customs brokers, logistics providers, and government agencies quickly identify the correct HS codes for goods being shipped internationally. It streamlines cross-border shipping and improves the accuracy of duty, tax, and fee predictions.

MILESTONE 1 - Design Refresh & Foundation Building
GOALS:
Modernize the interface
Make it quicker and easier to use
OUTCOMES:
Refreshed typography, spacing, and colors for a modern look
Applied design system components for consistency and future scalability
Consolidated workflow into a single-page design where users could edit inputs and instantly see new results → encouraged exploration since most users test multiple HS codes
Introduced an AI-generated initial state (MidJourney); first use of generative graphics in the dashboard

MILESTONE 2 - Building trust with confidence scores
GOALS:
Encourage users to provide detailed, accurate product descriptions
Increase transparency in how classifications are generated
OUTCOMES:
Boosted user trust in classification results
Added a confidence score indicator to show system confidence based on product details
Balanced visibility of scores without distracting from the main classification result
Scoring logic so more descriptive inputs = higher confidence
MILESTONE 3 - Less friction when results miss the mark
GOALS:
Reduce the need for reclassification
Give users alternate HS codes that may better match their product
Add transparency and flexibility
OUTCOMES:
Introduced up to 5 alternate HS code suggestions alongside the primary result
Designed a side-by-side comparison layout for easy evaluation
Enabled one-click selection to streamline the workflow
MILESTONE 4 - Completing the experience
GOALS:
Support postal opportunities by enhancing functionality
Allow users to check if the HS code they already have are valid and match product descriptions
Keep users inside the product for compliance checks
OUTCOMES:
Introduced two new modes: Validate and Check Coherency
Added clear pass/fail indicators for code validity and accuracy
Provided users with a new HS code if the one they provided doesn't pass validation
Reduced reliance on manual lookups outside the dashboard
